Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
by Betty Edwards
reviewed by Elizabeth
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards is a self-directional drawing manual which is designed to help the student enhance creativity and artistic confidence. This book requires no previous knowledge of art, and takes you through to a goal of lifelike portrait drawing. The book seeks to overcome negative perceptions of your own abilities by progressive exercises designed to build confidence. Probably the only thing that could stop you learning from this book is maintaining this negative perception of yourself.
All my life I have been terrible at drawing. I just haven't ever been able to "get it". I actually used to dislike drawing because I found it embarrassing that I was so bad at it. No, I don't suppose that is the best way to get better, but I just figured I couldn't do it. You know, the old "I'm just not gifted in that way."
Mum bought this book to work through with my siblings and it aroused my curiosity immediately. The first few exercises require you to draw two portraits. One of mine is pictured here. From here, the author takes you step by step through all the basic areas; edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadow, gestalts, memory and imagination. Not only does she explain these theories, but she also explains scientifically how the brain works, which probably was what helped me above all.
Of course, I realise that I still have long way to go with my style and technique, but I know now that it is an achievable end. Hey! If I can learn to draw, so can you!
